COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES - Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is a method of treatment using only plant material. Plant based medicine is still used as the primary form of health care by 80% of the world¹s population. The World Health Organisation's stated policy is to preserve and promote traditional herbal medicine because it is affordable, safe and effective. Herbal medicine is philosophically holistic, aiming to treat the person - in mind, body and spirit - not disease.

The most well known to treat mental health problems is St. John's Wort extract. St John's Wort is proven to be far more effective than placebo and as effective as antidepressant medication in treating mild or moderate depression. You should let your doctor know if you are taking St Johns Wort as it may react with other medicines you are prescribed.

If you want to consult a herbalist contact the National Institute of Medical Herbalists for a list or registered practioners.
