NHS HOSPITAL SERVICES

a) Acute in-patient Care
b) Mortimer Ward
c) Jenny Lind Ward
d) Day Hospital

If you live in Herefordshire and need to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital either as an in-patient or as a day patient, your doctor will arrange for you to go to :

The Stonebow Unit
County Hospital
Hereford
HR1 2ER
Tel: 01432 355444

Contact:
Margaret Reilly (Senior Nurse)

The Stonebow Unit has two adult admission wards, Mortimer and Jenny Lind with a total of 42 beds.
Which ward you go to will depend under which Consultant Psychiatrist you are admitted, which will in turn depend on which GP surgery you are registered with (see below).
They offer admission to anybody over 16 with a serious mental health problem, with the exception of people diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease or a similar illness who are admitted to Cantilupe Ward.

The wards are staffed by doctors, nurses and other support staff and provide 24 hour care to people with acute mental health crises.

Sleeping accomodation is provided in the form of 4 bedded single sex dormitories and single rooms. All the wards are mixed gender admitting both men and women from their respective catchment areas.

Neither of the wards have the resources to admit mothers with babies.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (0121 678 2000) in Birmingham has the nearest psychiatric Mother and Baby Unit, to which people from Herefordshire can be admitted for in-patient care.

Referrals
You can only be admitted to a ward at the Stonebow Unit with the agreement of the consultant psychiatrist who will be responsible for your treatment there. This means that if you are new to mental health services you must be referred by your GP.
If you are already seeing someone from Community Mental Health Team your Care Coordinator may well be able to negotiate your admission without being seen by your consultant.
